THE ROLE OF THE TEACHER AND METACOGNITION: CHALLENGES AND PERSPECTIVES FOR EDUCATIONAL QUALITY
ABSTRACT
This articule reflects on the urgent transformation required in contemporary education, particularly within the contexts of Latin America and Venezuela. Beyond the mere transmission of information, the modern teacher must serve as a mediator who fosters trust and autonomy. The text emphasizes that metacognition—the ability to understand and regulate one's own thinking—is
not merely a theoretical construct from authors such as Piaget, Vygotsky, or Flavell, but a vital tool for intellectual survival in the 21st century. The analysis reveals that educators face profound barriers: from structural crises and professional migration to a lack of tools for articulating internal mental processes. Nevertheless, a hopeful solution is proposed: "metacognitive literacy." This implies that teachers must learn to monitor their own affective and cognitive states to effectively model them for their students. Through the support of universities and postgraduate programs, the goal is to shift from mechanical instruction toward reflective praxis. In conclusion, metacognition acts as an "internal mirror" that enables teachers to act with greater intentionality, transforming the classroom into a space of resilience where students ultimately learn how to learn for themselves.
