Abstract

The digital divide remains one of the most complex and persistent structural challenges facing rural education in Latin America, as it deepens historical inequalities related to access, educational continuity, and quality. Limitations in connectivity, technological infrastructure, availability of digital resources, and teacher training directly affect the learning opportunities of children and young people living in rural territories. This article critically reflects on the relationship between the digital divide and pedagogical transformation, arguing that the integration of educational technologies cannot be reduced to the mere provision of devices or internet access, but rather should be understood as a systemic process involving pedagogical, institutional, and sociocultural change. Drawing on recent contributions from international organizations and specialized academic research, the study suggests that pedagogical transformation in rural contexts requires contextualized, human-centered, and participatory approaches capable of articulating the pedagogical use of technologies with local knowledge, community dynamics, and territorial realities. Furthermore, continuous teacher training is highlighted as a transversal axis for the development of critical, reflective, and ethical digital competencies aimed at socially meaningful educational innovation. Finally, the article emphasizes the urgent need for coherent, sustained, and territorially grounded public policies that promote digital equity, strengthen institutional capacities, and contribute to reducing educational gaps. Such policies are essential for enabling rural pedagogical innovation scenarios that guarantee the right to quality and inclusive education. In this sense, rural education must be rethought from a perspective of social justice and sustainable digital equity.
