Abstract

This research focused on the significance of musical improvisation, especially in the context of jazz, to the development of musical skills and competencies in students and graduates of music degree programs in Tunja, Colombia.

Objectives were focused on understanding perceptions about jazz, improvisation, and their benefits, as well as evaluating whether exposure to jazz improves improvisation skills. Methodology used was descriptive, with both quantitative and qualitative approaches, based on a questionnaire sent to twelve musicians. Results highlighted the unanimous perception of the importance of jazz and improvisation in musical development. Most participants recognized the positive influence on creativity, musical expression, and the ability to listen and answer in real-time. It has concluded that improvisation should be integrated from early stages in music education, given its technical relevance and its personal, creative, and professional impact.
