The assessment process of knowledge in primary education has traditionally been approached through summative methods. Although effective in certain areas, their effectiveness has been questioned due to their limited ability to foster motivation and meaningful learning. In response to these challenges, gamification has emerged as a novel and dynamic methodological strategy that enriches the assessment process. This descriptive study explores how gamification has been used in educational assessment through a review of academic literature, identifying strategies, tools, and their effect on student motivation and performance. The theoretical foundations of gamification in assessment are examined, addressing its conceptualization, main attributes, and pedagogical orientations, as well as the educational theories that underpin it, such as constructivism and flow theory. In addition, gamified methodologies applied to primary education assessment are analyzed, highlighting digital platforms such as Quizizz and Kahoot, the use of escape rooms, and artificial intelligence (AI) for personalized learning. The evidence reviewed indicates that gamification fosters active participation, autonomy, and immediate feedback—key elements for more effective and meaningful assessment in education.
