CHALLENGES AND DIFFICULTIES OF VENEZUELAN MIGRANT STUDENTS IN THE COLOMBIAN EDUCATION SYSTEM

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to identify the multiple problems faced by migrant girls, boys and adolescents in the Colombian educational system. Based on the authors' experience as teachers in two public educational institutions in Cúcuta, Norte de Santander, they conduct interviews on the social problems faced by venezuelan migrant families from the time they leave their homes to their entry into the Colombian Education System. They also highlight the responsibilities of schools and other educational authors in the violation of the right to education. The structure of this article is presented from the perspective of the realities experienced by these migrant minors from six angles: the new family environment; the economic crisis, family, legalization of legal status; access to the right to education; school stigmatization; and academic barriers. The methodology was based on mixed focus groups with students and parents from two educational institutions with a high concentration of migrant populations. As final conclusions, there are multiple factors that prevent the integration of Venezuelan migrant students in the classroom, evidencing the lack of commitment on the part of teachers and principals to guarantee the inclusion and guarantees of the right to education of this population.
