This research aims to analyze the comprehension levels of students in Loja, Ecuador, by examining their interpretations of transparent and well-known sayings. The study employs a quantitative approach with a field design and longitudinal perspective. A validated questionnaire consisting of fifteen multiple-choice questions, each with four possible answers, was administered to 215 students of different genders, ages, and educational levels: 8-9 years old (elementary school), 11-12 (middle school), and 15-18 (high school). The participants were enrolled in three schools in Loja, including two private schools and one public school. The results indicate that 8- and 9-year-old students predominantly exhibited literal comprehension (50% for the saying Donde manda capitán no manda marinero) or a lack of comprehension (55% for El matrimonio y la mortaja del cielo bajan). Among 11- and 12-year-old students, basic comprehension was observed (51% for Guerra avisada no mata soldado). For 15- to 18-year-olds, interpretive comprehension was more prevalent (69% and 73% for La letra con sangre entra). The study corroborates that comprehension improves with age and that around 11 years of age, figurative competence increases significantly. Age and familiarity with the sayings are factors that favor comprehension.
