THE CONSTRUCTION OF CHILDHOOD SUBJECTIVITIES THROUGH THE LENS OF SEXUALITY: EXPLORING IDENTITY IN CHILDHOOD

Abstract

The primary purpose of this study was to explore how gender identity is constructed during childhood through experiences of childhood sexuality and key social interactions—specifically within the family, school, and digital media environments. Framed within contemporary debates regarding subjectivity and gender in childhood, the work addresses the urgent need to critically examine the processes by which children form their identities in relation to prevailing sexual and gender norms. To this end, the study relies on a robust psycho-socio-analytic theoretical framework, drawing on insights from Silvia Bleichmar and other authors who view childhood subjectivity as a product of both individual psychic constitution and sociocultural influences. Methodologically, the study employed a qualitative, interpretive design, appropriate for the complex and sensitive nature of the phenomenon under investigation. Multiple data collection techniques were used, including in-depth interviews and focus groups with children, parents, and teachers. These methods were complemented by observations of the discourses present within the school, family, and digital media frequented by the children. This triangulation of sources made it possible to capture the multiplicity of voices and contexts involved in identity construction. Key findings reveal that the construction of gender identity in childhood is a dynamic, multifaceted process shaped by tensions and contradictions among various social discourses.
